  1. A form of pollination in which the pollen is
  2. carried by water. Hydrophily is very rare but
  3. occurs in a few aquatic species. In Canadian
  4. pondweed Elodea and tape grass Vallisneria,
  5. the male flowers break off whole and rise to
  6. the water surface where they encounter the
  7. female flowers which are borne on long
  8. stalks. In eel grasses Zostera, which are
  9. coastal plants growing totally submerged, the
  10. filamentous pollen grains are released into
  11. the water and carried by currents to the
  12. female flowers where they become wrapped
  13. around the stigmas.
